Communities in eco-tourism areas are given priority for employment arising from the tourism sector, according to the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism Mr Tshekedi Khama.
Mr Khama further told Parliament on Tuesday that youth can participate in businesses like arts, crafts and landscaping services at Nata Bird Sanctuary once development are completed at the sanctuary. “
Eco tourism encourages promotion of culture and heritage in respective regions in our country, and these results in maximizing of benefits to the host communities by further training on hospitality and tourism entrepreneurship with local accredited institutions,” the minister said in response to a question.
He however stated that expertise is usually brought in to build capacity where there is lack of skills.
He added that government has encouraged youth to open small businesses saying Botswana Tourism Organisation will assist young entrepreneurs by encouraging them to produce goods and services of high quality.
“Furthermore opportunities for the youth in tourism industry include young farmers who can supply required fresh produce to the local hotels and lodges.
There are also opportunities for tour operators, professional guides, travel agents and mobile camping operators to work with the sanctuary,” Mr Khama said. Nata/ Gweta MP Mr Polsen Majaha had asked the minister to state how interested youth is expected to participate in business relating to Nata Sanctuary Site.
