CAF unveils draw details for 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
22nd November 2024
The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has outlined the procedure for the highly anticipated draw of the 2024 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco.
Scheduled for Friday, November 22, 2024, the event will be hosted at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Salé, commencing at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT).
The tournament will feature Africa’s 12 best teams, divided into three groups of four. To ensure competitive balance, the teams are seeded into four levels based on FIFA rankings.
Morocco, the host nation, will occupy position A1, while defending champions South Africa and Nigeria will assume positions C1 and B1, respectively, as part of the Level 1 teams.
Joining them are teams from Level 2 (Zambia, Ghana, Tunisia), Level 3 (Mali, Senegal, Algeria), and Level 4 (DR Congo, Tanzania, Botswana).
CAF has adopted a systematic draw method using three pots to assign teams to Groups A, B, and C. Teams from Level 4 will be drawn first, followed by Levels 3 and 2.
This detailed process ensures an even and fair distribution, setting the stage for intense and exciting group-stage battles.
The 13th edition of WAFCON is scheduled from July 5 to July 26, 2025, and will mark a return to Morocco, where South Africa clinched their historic first title two years ago.
As anticipation builds, the tournament promises to showcase the best of women’s football on the African continent.
