A car ploughed into a crowd of Liverpool fans during Monday’s parade celebrating the club’s Premier League title, hospitalising 27 people—including four children—while two individuals remain in serious condition. Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
Merseyside Police confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver of the vehicle that struck a large group of supporters gathered in the city centre.
The incident occurred just minutes after the Liverpool team bus had passed, according to eyewitnesses cited by the BBC.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the car violently hitting fans, with some being thrown into the air. Four people became trapped under the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters.
A total of 20 people were treated at the scene before 27 were transported to local hospitals. Among those injured, one child and one adult are reported to be in serious condition.
In the chaos that followed, angry fans surrounded the vehicle and began smashing its windows. Police quickly intervened to prevent further escalation and secured the area.
Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims addressed the media, saying, “We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”
The tragic event occurred during what was otherwise a jubilant Spring Bank Holiday, as hundreds of thousands of fans flooded Liverpool’s streets to celebrate their team’s championship win.
Liverpool city council leader Liam Robinson described the crash as casting “a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day.”
