Carlos Queiroz hails Ghana’s determination after late win over Panama

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has praised the determination and fighting spirit of his players after the Black Stars secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday night.
The West African side looked set to begin their campaign with a frustrating draw before Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to hand Ghana all three points in Toronto.
Panama proved stubborn opponents throughout the contest, frustrating the Black Stars with a disciplined defensive display and threatening on the counterattack. However, Ghana remained composed and continued to push for a breakthrough until the final moments.
The decisive goal came after substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante sparked a swift counterattack, delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area for Yirenkyi, who arrived at the right moment and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to send Ghanaian supporters into jubilant celebrations.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz praised his team’s resilience but insisted the victory was only the beginning of a much bigger challenge.
“It means three points. That’s it. We’ve won the first half, but now we still have to play the second and third halves of this important tournament. But I’m so happy for the boys. So happy,” the former Real Madrid coach said.
The victory gives Ghana the ideal start to their World Cup campaign and strengthens their position in Group L following England’s win over Croatia earlier in the day.
The result also provides the Black Stars with a significant confidence boost as they prepare for a crucial second group match against England, where another positive result could move them closer to the knockout stages.
