The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has rendered its verdict on the appeal filed by George Akwasi Afriyie concerning the 2023 Ghana Football Association (GFA) Presidential Elections.

In a decision delivered on Monday, May 6, 2024, CAS upheld the ruling of the GFA Appeals Committee and ordered Afriyie to cover legal costs.

The appellant, George Akwasi Afriyie, had contested his disqualification from the GFA Presidential race, seeking redress from CAS.

Afriyie aimed to overturn the decision of the Appeals Committee and secure the opportunity to run for the GFA presidency.

However, CAS ruled against Afriyie, affirming the decision of the GFA Appeals Committee.

Additionally, CAS mandated Afriyie to pay CHF1,000.00 to the Ghana Football Association as a contribution towards legal expenses. Furthermore, Afriyie will be responsible for covering the costs of arbitration, determined separately.

Afriyie's appeal was based on his contention that he met the criteria outlined in Article 30(3) of the GFA Statutes to contest for the GFA presidency.

However, the GFA argued that Afriyie's nomination did not comply with the statutory requirements, specifically regarding the endorsement of his candidacy.

CAS ultimately concluded that Afriyie's nomination lacked the necessary support from GFA members, falling short of the stipulated minimum.

Therefore, the decision to disqualify Afriyie from the GFA Presidential Elections was upheld.

With CAS's ruling, the matter concerning Afriyie's disqualification from the 2023 GFA Presidential Elections is now concluded, providing clarity and closure to the issue.
