The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Effia Constituency, Abdul Majeed Dokurgu, has lauded the positive impact of the "Clean-up Effia" initiative just one month since its launch on May 1st.
The project, under Dokurgu's "Building Opportunities 4 Sustainable Solutions (BOSS)" initiative for the constituency ahead of the 2024 elections, aims to foster a cleaner and more hygienic environment for residents.
The Effia Constituency has been grappling with sanitation issues for years due to poor waste management infrastructure and a lack of comprehensive policies.
Frequent flooding during rainy seasons has disrupted lives and businesses, exacerbated by clogged drains and indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
But the parliamentary candidate, in an update, indicated the initiative has already shown tangible results, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
"Last Saturday was exactly a month old since we launched the Clean-up Effia Project," he said.
"We were at West-Tanokrom last weekend, and the enthusiasm was high, and even the rains couldn't stop us."
"We have already had success stories with this exercise, as most of the flood-prone areas in Effia-Kuma's number one area were not affected this year due to the desilting of the main drain in the area."
Beyond the physical impact, he revealed that the project has fostered a sense of community spirit.
"The social impact of this exercise so far has provided an opportunity for our community members to come together and work towards a common goal of cleaning our environment," Dokurgu explained.
"This can help build relationships, foster a sense of community spirit, and promote teamwork and collaboration."
As Dokurgu seeks to clinch the parliamentary seat for the NDC, which has eluded them since 1997, tackling this sanitation crisis is a top priority.
He elaborated on the project's structure: "The 'Clean-up Effia Project' is a comprehensive three-month clean-up exercise that will start from May to July every year.
The exercise happens every other Saturday and includes cleaning our surroundings, removing debris from our drains, and picking up refuse for free."
It forms part of a broader strategy to address long-standing issues in the constituency, demonstrating his commitment to tangible change.
To facilitate proper waste disposal, refuse bins have been strategically placed at vantage points throughout the community.
This multi-faceted approach combines volunteer efforts to clean surroundings, clear drains of debris, and provide free refuse collection services every other Saturday.
Expressing gratitude, he added, "A big thank you to my constituency executives, Assembly and unit committee members, chiefs, opinion leaders, and the entire residents of Effia constituency for their collaboration thus far."
Abdul Majeed Dokurgu is making his first attempt to win the Effia Constituency parliamentary seat for the NDC in a constituency that has been a stronghold for the NPP since 1997.
However, with innovative projects like this sanitation drive, Dokurgu hopes to break this long-standing trend, offering a fresh perspective and practical solutions to the constituency's pressing challenges.
