The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has directed the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to immediately reverse its decision to suspend the employment contracts of all staff following flood damage to the company’s Accra headquarters.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, the Ministry described the directive as unacceptable and instructed all employees to disregard the internal notice.

“The Ministry takes a very strong view of the directive and immediately instructs Management to reverse that decision. All GDCL staff are to disregard the directive,” the statement said.

The intervention comes after GDCL announced that it was temporarily suspending the contracts of all employees effective July 1, citing extensive damage caused by the June 29 floods. According to the company, the flooding disrupted operations and affected businesses operating within the technology hub.

The Ministry acknowledged the challenges posed by the disaster but assured staff of its support, noting that many employees had also suffered personal losses as a result of the flooding.

It further announced that GDCL’s management had been summoned to a meeting on Thursday, July 2, to explain the circumstances surrounding the decision and discuss the appropriate course of action.

The development follows a visit by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, to the Ghana Digital Centres on June 30 to assess the extent of the flood damage and its impact on businesses and operations at the facility.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong, has defended the decision to suspend staff contracts, insisting the measure should not be misconstrued as a dismissal.

She explained that the decision was necessitated by the severe flood damage, which rendered parts of the facility unsafe for use and significantly affected the centre’s ability to generate revenue, making the temporary suspension of contracts a difficult but necessary step.
