The alumni and students of the Unity and University halls of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have embarked on a half-naked demonstration to fight against the university’s conversion of all of its residential halls into mixed-gender facilities.

The university authorities announced that Katanga, Unity, Africa, Independence, University and Queen Elizabeth halls, effective 2018/19 academic year, will house both male and female students despite strong opposition from a section of the students and alumni.

Some past and present students of the university have vowed to resist the move.

On Friday, 17 August 2018, the students from Katanga (University Hall) and Conti (Unity Hall) demonstrated half-naked on the streets of Kumasi with some carrying coffins bearing the image of the Vice Chancellor.

They are expected to present a petition to the Chancellor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace.
