The Ashanti Regional Council of Ulamau and Imams has joined the campaign to keep the nation calm as it talks the youth in the Zongo communities out of anything evil, reckless and unlawful.

Sheikh Abdul Mummin Haroun, the Regional Imam, said they should be responsible and resist overtures by self-seeking politicians to foment trouble during the political campaign and voting day.

In a speech read for him at a two-day workshop meant to deepen the participation of Muslims in the electoral process, he said it was important for all to uphold the peace.

The programme was organized by the Islamic Foundation for Peace and Development (IFPAD), a civil society organization, with support from the United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

It was held under the theme 'Strengthening the Islamic community's participation in the electoral process'.

Attending were political party youth activists, Muslim scholars, youth associations, women groups and opinion leaders in the Asawasi constituency.

The programme is part of a nationwide project by the Foundation to sensitize and assist people in the Zongo communities to show strong commitment towards peaceful polls.

The Regional Imam reminded political leaders to accept to play by the rules of fair play to remove needless tension and nasty clashes in this year's election.

Mr. Garba Auwdu Talle, Executive-Secretary of IFPAD, took the participants through various topics including 'Causes, effects and resolution of conflicts', 'Role of Muslim leaders in curbing violence' and 'Election 2016 and building democratic dispensation'.

He appealed to Imams to continue to educate, counsel and aid the youth to channel their enormous energy into productive ventures.
