The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Otiko Afisa Djaba has entreated couples to share domestic chores together with their partners.
In typical Ghanaian homes, the women do the cooking and other house chores no matter the kind of work they do.

Some feminists have condemned the practice arguing that its against the rights of women.

She said she doesn’t expect husbands to be sitting idle watching Television or reading Newspapers expecting their tired-wives to arrive home late to cook for them.

But addressing a group of young women at the launch of an internship and mentoring programme under the auspices of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) in Accra, she advised, “My daughter is a student of Oil and Gas and I don’t expect her to come back from work late and be cooking while her husband is in the hall watching television. I have invested a lot of money in her education and so in terms of equity we must share the household chores. We are equal stakeholders.”

She challenged boys to inculcate the habit of helping their female siblings in performing the house chores to enable them pursue their ambitions.
He said the boy child should not only be given the free space to pursue his education whiles the girl child is left out.

“For you to have time to pursue your ambitions and dreams and get to the next level just like the boy child you must have time for your studies and that means household chores must be shared. The time has come for parents to educate their children to share household chores,” she urged.
