The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has sent its condolences to the government of Cuba, expressing grief over the death of the Caribbean nation’s former president, Fidel Castro.

The revolutionary leader’s death was announced on Friday, November 25, with nine days’ mourning declared in Cuba.

The CPP, in a press statement signed by chairman Prof Edmund Delle, said it was saddened by the news. It added: “Under the leadership of Comrade Castro, Ghana has benefited tremendously from Cuban training of thousands of its technocrats and the provision of medical brigade and other technical aid.”

The CCP said Dr Castro “was an extraordinary leader who was selfless and stood for the principles of self-determination, social justice and internationalism”, further stating: “He was indeed an inspiration and a towering figure in the national liberation movement and the independence struggle in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

“Fidel stood and fought for the dignity of the ordinary person, he fought against poverty, hunger, illiteracy, exploitation, imperialism, racism, and all forms of oppression and inequality everywhere on our planet. He will be remembered for completing the independence struggle of Cuba so painfully truncated by the Platt Amendment of 1902 by the USA.”

For the CPP, the thoughts, revolutionary deeds and internationalism championed by the former leader “will continue to live on and inspire us and future generations all over the world”.
