Barcelona Sporting Director Deco has provided insights into why the club chose not to pursue a transfer for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, despite the player's growing reputation and interest from several top European clubs.
Nico Williams, who boasts Ghanaian heritage, had emerged as a priority target for both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain after an impressive season in La Liga.
The 22-year-old winger made a significant impact for Athletic Bilbao, tallying 5 goals and 11 assists in 31 league appearances. His standout performances also contributed to Spain's triumph at Euro 2024.
Despite these achievements, Deco stated that Barcelona ultimately decided not to pursue Williams due to their already strong attacking lineup.
“We didn't sign Nico Williams because we have players like Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Ansu Fati, Lamine Yamal, along with Fermin López and Dani Olmo who can cover those positions," Deco explained.
Deco further emphasized that Dani Olmo's versatility in multiple attacking roles provided the squad with the necessary depth, reducing the need for an additional winger. "Dani Olmo gives us more options rather than signing another winger," he added.
Another factor likely influencing Barcelona's decision was the cost associated with signing Williams.
The player remains under contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2027, and his buyout clause is set at approximately €63 million (£53 million), a figure that may have proved prohibitive for the Catalan club.
Ultimately, Nico Williams continues his career at Athletic Bilbao, where he remains a vital component of their squad.
