A Deputy Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal Deen Abdul, has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to disqualify political parties which engage in vigilantism from contesting elections in the country.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on "Kokrokoo" on Peace FM, the NPP Communications Deputy Director expressed worry over the trend where the youth are exploited by politicians to cause mayhem in the nation.

According to him, political vigilantism is not only a security threat but destroying the fabric of the economy as well, and should be checked by the appropriate authorities.

He believed a step forward to ending political vigilantism is for the Political Parties Act to be amended to include that any political party that entertains vigilante groups is excluded from the country's electoral system to serve as deterrent to other parties.

He was of a strong view that such a move will help address the issue of vigilantism and also put political parties on their right toes.

“You cannot have a political party which has ethnicity tone, which has religious tone or which of course seeks to divide us. You are abhorred. You cannot do that. There is a prohibition to it. Why can’t we amend that section to include that a political party that of course is seen to be organizing vigilantism or organizing young men to cause mayhem stands disqualified by the Electoral Commission not to contest elections in this country,” he stated emphatically.

“That is where we’re going to correct ourselves and that is why we will be careful. We’re a nation that is growing and laws should check us,” he added.
