Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has called for a stronger emphasis on developing local players for the Black Stars following the team's underwhelming start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana, whose last AFCON triumph dates back to 1982, began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium.

This was followed by a 1-1 draw with Niger in Berkane, leaving the Black Stars in third place in Group F with just one point from two matches.

In light of these disappointing results, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe has advocated for a shift in strategy, pointing to Niger's squad, which includes several home-based players, as an example of a successful model.

He stressed that Ghana's coaches should focus on nurturing local talent to build a more competitive team.

“What they need is to look inward now. If they are real coaches, they should be able to train our local boys because our counterparts play with local boys in their countries and just mix them with one or two foreign players,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe told Graphic Sports.

The Black Stars will aim to secure their first win of the qualifiers in an important doubleheader against Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan next month.
