Drama at Bole court as thief escapes in handcuffs

A 22-year-old carpenter, Seidu Abdul-Aziz, who was sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing a sheep, escaped from the courtroom in Sawla, Savannah Region, with police handcuffs still on his wrists after receiving his sentence.

The prosecutor, ASP Wisdom Pavis, told the court that the accused had been spotted selling a stolen sheep at the Sawla market.

The sheep had been taken from the complainant’s house two days prior, and after a chase, Abdul-Aziz was apprehended.

He was arrested by police and admitted to the crime, explaining that he resorted to theft because he is an orphan.

Charged with stealing a sheep valued at GH¢1,000.00 and unlawful entry, Abdul-Aziz pleaded guilty.

In court, he asked for leniency, requesting forgiveness from the presiding judge, His Worship Edward Essel.

The court fined Abdul-Aziz GH¢1,000.00 and sentenced him to six months in prison as a first-time offender.

However, shortly after the sentencing, Abdul-Aziz managed to flee the courtroom with police handcuffs still on.

His escape was short-lived, as the Sawla police, along with some local youth, quickly arrested him a few meters away from the Bole District Magistrate Court.
