Several houses in Akyem Oda were flooded early this week following about five hours of torrential rains in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The rainstorm which lasted for about five hours did not only flood several locations rendering thousands homeless but also affected both public and private property costing several thousands of Ghana Cedis.

According to the Birim Central Municipal National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator, David Okyere, a lot of houses have been affected including schools. “As we speak so many schools have been totally ripped off.” He lamented.

He added that they are still assessing the extent of damage caused to both public and private properties after which they will compile an official report for onward submission to the Eastern Regional NADMO office for onward delivery to the National office for assistance.

Some of the victims who spoke with the eveningmailgh said they slept in churches and relatives house after the storm because their homes were no longer safe for occupation.

They have therefore appealed to authorities to distil the choked rivers in the area to prevent another flood.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, Victoria Adu who went round with a team from the Police, Fire Service, and NADMO to assess the situation expressed her sympathy with the victims. She assured them of the support of government to ameliorate their plight.
