A woman was severely burnt after her husband angrily shoved her onto burning charcoal.
The incident occurred Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at Akotoe a farming community in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern region.
According to a witness, the couple had a misunderstanding while burning biomass to produce Charcoal which is their source of livelihood.
The man, identified as Yaow Abotsi could not control his anger and gave the wife a hefty shove which landed her on the burning charcoal.
The woman,Theresa Abotsi, suffered severe burns around the body particularly her back and buttocks.
The case has not been reported to the Police neither the victim sent to the hospital.
However, some officials of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Upper Manya Krobo District who got a hint of the incident during a routine exercise in the area are reported to have taken the matter up.
Women in Ghana continue to suffer varied forms of domestic violence despite the existence of the Domestic Violence Act of Ghana which prescribes criminal sanctions for perpetrators of domestic violence and offer remedies for domestic violence victims.
Concerns have been raised over the low rate of prosecution of culprits of domestic violence, and governments fail to set up Victims of Domestic violence Support Fund instructed under Section 9 of the Domestic Violence Act 732.
The “Victims of Domestic Violence Support Fund” if established, will seek to support the basic material needs of victims, train the families of victims, rehabilitate and reintegrate victims with families, construct of reception shelters for victims in the regions and districts and training and capacity building of persons connected with the provision of shelter.”
