The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a GH¢2.76 million infrastructure project to construct a new 11kV distribution line from the Afari Primary Substation to Nkawie, aimed at significantly enhancing electricity reliability for several communities in the Ashanti Region.

According to a report by Citi Newsroom, the project forms part of ECG’s broader efforts to strengthen power distribution infrastructure across Greater Kumasi and its surrounding areas.

Ing. George Amoah, Ashanti West Regional General Manager of ECG, explained that the new line is intended to reduce the load on the heavily burdened Agogo Primary Substation feeder, thereby ensuring a more stable and efficient power supply to communities including Nkawie, Toase, and Mpasatia.

“The long distance of the older line contributed to low voltage issues, particularly during peak demand periods,” Amoah noted.

As part of the upgrade, ECG is installing 92 eleven-meter poles and three twelve-meter poles to support the enhanced transmission network. The new distribution line will replace the outdated system that caused persistent low voltage challenges due to its length and overload during high-demand periods.

Amoah emphasized that the project is expected to deliver several operational improvements, including a more stable voltage profile, reduced system losses, and increased efficiency in electricity distribution.

Ultimately, the initiative seeks to provide both residents and businesses in the affected areas with a more reliable and consistent power supply, supporting local development and economic activity.
