ECOWAS endorses Mahama for AU chairmanship in 2027
15th December 2025
The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the African Union (AU) Chair when the rotating chairmanship reaches West Africa in 2027.
The endorsement follows a unanimous recommendation by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, which named President Mahama as the region’s sole candidate during its 95th Ordinary Session held in Abuja. The recommendation was subsequently forwarded to the Authority of Heads of State and Government and formally adopted on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
In a statement, ECOWAS thanked member states for supporting Ghana’s candidacy, citing the country’s contributions to regional integration and its strong international standing.
“[We are] determined to work in a concerted manner to support the candidates of ECOWAS Member States or their nationals in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure that the interests of ECOWAS continue to be promoted and protected,” part of the statement read.
The bloc said the endorsement reflects its commitment to promoting the collective interests of West Africa in continental and global institutions, including the African Union.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its determination to support candidates from member states seeking positions in international organisations, noting that the move would help strengthen the region’s influence within the AU and beyond.
The decision clears the way for Ghana’s formal bid for the AU chairmanship when the position becomes available to West Africa in 2027.
