Former Black Stars goalkeeper Abukari Damba has raised concerns about the lack of consistency among the national team's current goalkeepers.
Speaking to Pan-Africa Football, Damba highlighted the need for the likes of Lawrence Ati-Zigi (FC St. Gallen), Manaf Nurudeen (KAS Eupen), and Joseph Wollacott to step up and deliver stable performances during national assignments.
Damba emphasized the importance of regular game time to develop resilience and composure under pressure:
"Goalkeeping is a very sensitive position, it’s a specialized area. We need consistency, and consistency comes from playing many more games. That is what builds your temperament for bigger games."
He praised the efforts of the current crop but stressed that sporadic appearances do not provide the foundation for long-term success:
"It’s not just about playing one or two games and performing well. It’s about how you recover from mistakes and deal with challenges as they come."
Damba called for the goalkeepers to be tested in high-pressure situations, such as major tournaments, to gauge their ability to perform consistently at the highest level.
"Let’s see them in competitions, different levels, against different opponents, and playing under pressure. That’s when we can truly assess their capabilities."
The Black Stars' goalkeeping department has faced scrutiny in recent years, with fans and analysts questioning the reliability of the players tasked with guarding the posts.
Damba’s comments come at a time when Ghana’s national team is under the microscope following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, amplifying calls for improvement in all departments of the team.
