Former Ghanaian midfielder Anthony Annan has leveled accusations against Black Stars team doctors, alleging they lied to the public about an injury he sustained during a pre-AFCON friendly in 2013.

Annan claims that the medical staff stated he suffered the injury while playing for his club, Osasuna, but he asserts that he actually hurt himself during a match against Egypt.

"I was playing for Osasuna in Spain at the time. We had a tournament in South Africa (AFCON 2013), so we had to go into camp.

In football, if a player is injured, the club won't release you for national duty. My presence in the Black Stars camp indicates that I was fit," Annan revealed in an interview with Geomends Media.

Recalling the incident, Annan detailed how he sustained the ankle injury during a friendly match against Egypt a week before the tournament. "I was the captain, and during the game, there was a moment where I had to jump and make a pass. When I landed, I twisted my ankle," he explained.

Initially thinking the injury wasn't severe, Annan was unable to continue playing and later discovered he had a cracked bone. Despite receiving treatment, including injections and beach sand therapy, he couldn't fully recover.

As a result, Annan missed the remainder of the tournament and was compelled to retire from international football. He asserts that the doctors' decision to misrepresent his injury led to financial repercussions, as Schalke, his parent club, refused to pay him for the second round of the season.

"The journalists kept asking when I would be fit, but I never recovered. The doctor had to lie to them, claiming it was an old injury.

However, if it was an existing injury, Osasuna wouldn’t have permitted me to join the Black Stars. This situation frustrated me because I was on loan at Osasuna from Schalke 04," Annan lamented.

Annan, who scored two goals in 62 appearances for Ghana, currently plays for lower-tier German side DJK Arminia Lirich.
