Former Black Stars player and coach, Ibrahim Sunday says that Ghana are not favourites to win the African Cup of Nations tournament which starts on Sunday 9th January,2022 but admits that favourites are not always guaranteed the trophy.

Ghana is seeking to end the almost four decade wait for the African Cup of Nations trophy when the 33rd edition kicks off in Cameroon this weekend.

The Black Stars have not won the biennial tournament since last winning in Libya in 1982 although the Ghana team has gone close three times in 1992, 2010 and 2015 but lost all finals to neighbours Ivory Coast and Egypt.

Many Ghanaians have lost faith in the team after their dismal showing in the only preparatory game against African Champions Algeria in Qatar on Wednesday.

But Ibrahim Sunday who won the 1971 African Footballer of the year gong believes all is not lost as Ghana can still won the tournament with the right preparations.

“Every country qualified for the tournament [AFCON] and the dream of every country is to win the trophy.

“The trophy will be won by only one country.

“It’s true Ghana has not won the trophy for 40 years but maybe this time, it could be ours.

“If you look at the teams that are going for the tournament, if we shall be truthful, the Black Stars are not favourites to win the cup.

“But favourites are not guaranteed to win tournaments.

“A well prepared side, psychologically, mentally, physically and and everything normally have the chance to win the trophy.

“Has Ghana prepared the players in that manner?

“Although the Black Stars are not favourites but if they work hard with good training, they can win the tournament.” Ibrahim Sunday told Edubiaseman fm.

Ghana is in Group C of the tournament with the likes Morocco, Gabon and Comoros and will play its opening game on Monday 10th January,2022.
