Female Ghanaian artistes have not been accorded the kind of respect that they deserve and that is because of the general perception that their performance over the years has not been impressive.

With the exception of late Dancehall artiste, Ebony, who won Artiste of the Year at this year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, most of the topmost awards at a number of awards shows have been won by men and this has contributed to people’s views that the women are not doing well.

However, talented Dancehall artiste, MzVee disagrees with that assertion.

In a recent interview with Showbiz, the Natural Girl hitmaker said there has been massive improvement by females in the industry and the number is growing compared to when she first started out.

“I think the industry is growing everyday and it is definitely not the same as when I started my music career.

"When I started out, there were few females in the industry but it is evident that we have more females hitting the industry now and they are doing very well.

“The females can get much attention like the guys; I feel it’s about the work that goes into the music we make.

"I have been nominated for the BET Awards and other awards because I put in a lot of work and people see what I do beyond the shores in Ghana. I think it is the work you put into your music and brand,” MzVee said.

MzVee said in our culture, parents are strict on the females and it is very hard for them to accept the fact that their daughters want to pursue music unlike when it comes to dealing with male children.

She added that parents have the idea that girls are fragile and boys are strong but she is happy about the rise in the number of female artistes in the industry.

The award winning musician also spoke about the attention her Bend Downsong is getting saying the feedback has been amazing.

“Bend Down is dance music and everyone knows I love to dance a lot. I heard the beat and I just knew I had to jump on it. The reception has been so good, she said.

MzVee hit the limelight in 2012 as part of girl band, D3, managed by Lynx Entertainment, which later split up.

She began her solo career shortly afterwards under Lynx and she has released a number of hit songs like Bokor Bokor, Sing My Name, Rewind, Daavi, Come And See My Moda, I Don’t Know among others.

MzVee, who has been in the industry for seven years says she has grown as a person in the industry and music has given her another perspective about life and how she associates with people.
