FIFA President Gianni Infantino has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family of the late former Black Stars captain Emanuel Awuley Quaye, who passed away on March 25, 2024.

In a letter addressed to the bereaved family, Infantino expressed profound sadness at the loss of the 1978 African Cup of Nations winner, fondly known as Awuley Quaye Senior. He remarked, “Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss.”

Infantino highlighted Quaye's illustrious career, noting his significant contributions as a regular fixture in the national team and his leadership role in guiding the Black Stars to victory in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 1978. Additionally, he acknowledged Quaye's enduring legacy at club level with Accra Great Olympics FC.

Describing Quaye as a legend and icon of Ghanaian football renowned for his character, leadership, and passion, Infantino assured that his legacy both on and off the pitch would be cherished and remembered.

The FIFA President extended sympathies to the Ghana Football Association, the family, loved ones, and all affected by the loss of the former national team player.

Meanwhile, the family of Emanuel Awuley Quaye paid a visit to GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku to formally inform him of the legendary defender's demise.

Led by his son, Awuley Quaye Jnr, the family apprised the GFA President of the circumstances surrounding Quaye's passing and discussed plans for his burial.

Emanuel Awuley Quaye, celebrated not only for his contributions to the national team but also for his pivotal role in the successes of Ghanaian Premier League club Great Olympics during the 1970s, leaves behind a lasting legacy in Ghanaian football.
