Six 7 series sets, smartwatch swindled on IISER campus The Chaturshrungi police on Friday registered a case against a man for allegedly swindling six iPhones and a smartwatch which were valued at a combined worth of around Rs2.99 lakh from a Flipkart delivery boy on the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) campus.
As per the complaint filed by the delivery boy identified as Chetan Ghodekar, 27, resident of Wadarwadi near Gokhale Nagar, he had to deliver six iPhones and a smartwatch at the D building of IISER on behalf of the e-commerce giant. Each of the iPhone 7 sets was worth around Rs 49,000.

The incident happened around 11 am on January 20. The victim was to deliver the phones ordered against cash on delivery option to a woman. On his arrival, he was approached at the parking by a man, who identified himself as Amol. He said that the woman who had ordered the iPhones was his colleague and was out working on the campus. He added that he was instructed to receive it on her behalf and keep it in office. Then he asked the delivery boy to collect money from her flat located nearby.

“To make the plot believable, he said that it was his colleague’s birthday. The suspect told the delivery boy that he has no bike and asked him to return to the IISER campus as soon as possible and help him out by dropping him outside the campus,” said Narayan Palampalle, sub-inspector of Chaturshringi police station.

The delivery boy then visited the customer’s home address only to find that no one by that name stayed there.

“It is believed that the suspect himself had ordered the phone and waited to prey on the victim. He might himself have been a delivery boy at some point because he seemed to have a very good knowledge of how the deliverymen function. This is a new modus operandi,” the official added. A case has been registered under the sections 417, 419 and 420 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating and impersonation. The police have launched a manhunt with the help of cyber experts. The officials of e-commerce giant were also alerted of the theft.
