Member of Parliament (MP) for  Mpraeso and member of Parliament’s Communications Committee, Davis Ansah Opoku, has called on the government to prioritise the introduction of unlimited monthly data plans for Ghanaians instead of merely increasing data bundle sizes.

His call follows a recent government announcement that mobile network operators—MTN, Telecel, and AT, will roll out larger data bundles starting July 1, 2025.

At a press briefing, Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, revealed that data allocations across the three major networks will increase by 10% to 15%.

For instance, MTN’s GHC399 bundle will be restored to provide 214GB, while Telecel and AT are also expected to enhance data volumes on their packages.

While welcoming the improvement, Opoku argues that such pay-per-gigabyte models are outdated and insufficient to meet the demands of today’s digital world.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, June 10, he called on the government to engage telecom companies in implementing flat-rate, unlimited data plans.

“It is not about reduction in the prices of data. What we require of the government is what is happening elsewhere —like the USA, like the UK, like Germany , is that the Ghanaian should be made to pay a fixed amount every month and enjoy unlimited data services. That is what the youth are calling for," he said.
