Former Gambia coach Tom Saintfiet has emerged as one of the contenders for the vacant head coaching position of the Ghanaian national team, the Black Stars.
The position became available after Chris Hughton was sacked following Ghana's unexpected elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage.
Sources close to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) indicate that Saintfiet is under consideration for the role.
The 50-year-old Belgian recently resigned as Gambia's coach after their exit from the ongoing AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
Despite Gambia's group stage elimination, Saintfiet is widely praised for his transformative impact on Gambian football.
When Saintfiet took over in July 2018, Gambia was ranked 168th globally, and he guided them to rise to 126th.
Under his leadership, Gambia exceeded expectations in the 2021 AFCON, beating Mauritania, Tunisia, and Guinea but losing to hosts Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
With coaching experience across four different FIFA confederations and a significant background in African football, having managed teams like Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Togo, Saintfiet's track record has reportedly impressed the GFA.
While Saintfiet is considered a strong candidate, the GFA is still in the process of evaluating several potential candidates for the Black Stars coaching position.
No official approach has been made as of now.
If appointed, Saintfiet would face the challenge of revitalizing the Black Stars after their recent struggles under Hughton.
