A social media campaign has been launched to urg the President, Nana Akuffo-Addo, to fund Ghana’s domestic violence law.

This call is by global Ghanaian multimedia production company, EAA Media Productions.

Ghana’s Domestic Violence Law is called Domestic Violence Act 2007 (Act 723) and there is the Domestic Violence Regulation 2016 (L.I 2237).

In 2016, the government was sued by Martin Kpebu for the activation of the Domestic Violence Fund and what comes with that – free medical care for domestic violence survivors.

When a domestic violence survivor reports to the police, she or he is given a medical form to seek medical attention in a public hospital or medical facility.

The form is completed by a doctor stating sufficient details of diagnosis and injury. This form and the medical care that come with it, is imperative in receiving affordable medical attention, evidence gathering, and bringing a case.

But, millions cannot afford this. As a result, they have no legal protection. No paid medical care. No evidence. No case.

EAA Media Productions is spearheading the campaign this month as March is named a month that honours, celebrates and acts in support of women.

This social media campaign urges the president to take political action to implement a legislative instrument that will serve the vulnerable who struggle and suffer due to an unfunded domestic violence law.

The campaign also calls on the government to put its gender rhetoric where its politics lie and fund and implement this long overdue Law.

With a harrowing and powerful 2-minute video, a hashtag #FundGHDomesticViolenceLaw, Ghanaians in Ghana and across the Diaspora are watching the video, using the hashtag and calling on Ghana’s president to act swiftly.
