The Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, has reiterated the company’s commitment to enhancing security across all airports in Ghana amid rising and increasingly complex global aviation threats.

She noted that the aviation security environment continues to evolve, with criminal and terrorist tactics becoming more sophisticated and difficult to detect.

“The aviation security landscape is constantly changing. Threats are becoming more complex and sophisticated, with tactics ranging from improvised weapons and explosives to the exploitation of advanced technologies,” she said.

Opare explained that perpetrators now employ elaborate concealment techniques, including camouflaging, disguising, dismantling and manipulating prohibited items, in attempts to bypass existing security systems.

According to her, these emerging risks call for heightened vigilance, continuous innovation and stronger collaboration among all stakeholders within the aviation sector.

“These realities demand constant alertness, innovation and collective responsibility. We cannot afford complacency,” she stressed.

The GACL Managing Director also highlighted the company’s vision of positioning Ghana as the aviation hub of choice and a leader in airport business in West Africa, noting that this ambition can only be achieved through teamwork, dedication and the active involvement of staff and partners across the country’s airports.

“Our airports are critical national assets and must be protected at all times with unwavering commitment against terrorism and other acts of unlawful interference,” she added.

Opare made these remarks at the maiden edition of Aviation Security Week, held in Accra on Monday, February 9, 2026.

The event, themed “Promoting a Strong and Dynamic Security Culture,” aims to embed security awareness into everyday aviation operations and builds on the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) 2019 Year of Security Culture initiative, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
