Illegal miners, popularly called galamseyers, have been captured in a terrifying video circulating on social media, violently assaulting three individuals accused of stealing gold-rich soil.
In the video, the victims are subjected to repeated machete attacks by a group of men believed to be part of an illegal mining syndicate.
One of the victims, seen carrying a piece of mining equipment, reportedly a machine used for gold extraction,n was particularly targeted, struggling under the weight while enduring relentless blows from his attackers.
Throughout the attack, no intervention is seen, raising concerns about the lawlessness in some mining communities.
The video has reignited debate over the growing violence associated with illegal mining in Ghana, a crisis that continues to plague the country despite a series of high-profile crackdowns and government-led anti-galamsey campaigns.
Outraged citizens have taken to social media to question how such violent and unlawful acts continue to occur openly, often without consequences.
“If illegal miners feel bold enough to attack people on camera with machetes, then clearly the system is failing,” one user posted on X.
Many have also raised doubts about the effectiveness of ongoing anti-galamsey operations, calling on authorities to not only arrest the perpetrators in the video but also review the broader security and enforcement strategy in illegal mining hotspots.
