PSG and Dutch International Georginio Wijnaldum has revealed how how he got the Ghanaian name 'Boateng' as a surname.
The central midfielder says that he has not been using Boateng for the past four years after he dropped it.
He joined French giants PSG last summer on a free transfer after departing Liverpool FC.
Wijnaldum came through the ranks at PSV Eindhoven and was a shinning light for the Dutch team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
After a sensational World Cup he joined English giants Liverpool where he helped them win the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and Premier League in 2020.
Speaking in an interview, the 31 year old midfielder disclosed that he has no connection to Ghana and was only named Boateng by his step father but jettisoned the name when his step father left her mother,
"I want to put on record that I am now Georginio Wijnaldum, not Georginio Boateng, in fact, I have been known as George Wijnaldum for four years now,” he stated as quoted by GOAL.
“Boateng was the name of my former stepfather who is related to retired Dutch footballer of Ghanaian origin George Boateng. My stepfather gave his surname to me but after he divorced my mother I got the Boateng off my name and took my mother’s name Wijnaldum as my surname.”
Giorginio Wijnaldum won the French Ligue 1 with PSG having made over 30 appearances for them in all competitions with a goal and three assists.
