On Thursday, June 20, 2024, Kurt Simeon-Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), presented the 2023-24 MTN FA Cup trophy to Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

The presentation ceremony, held ahead of the highly anticipated final between Nsoatreman FC and Bofoakwa Tano on Sunday, was attended by members of the Organising Committee, GFA officials, MTN representatives, and the media.

President Simeon-Okraku seized the opportunity to highlight the rich history of the FA Cup and the significance of its association with the University of Ghana. He emphasized the enduring relationship between the GFA and the country's premier university, and the future prospects for Ghanaian football.

"The FA Cup is the biggest football competition organized by the GFA, involving 112 clubs from Division Two, Division One, and the Premier League.

It is a coveted trophy fought for by many," said Simeon-Okraku.

He noted that the finalists, Nsoatreman FC and Bofoakwa Tano, both hail from the Bono Ahafo Region, adding an extra layer of excitement to the match, aptly named the Bono Derby.

The GFA President elaborated on the decision to hold the final at the University of Ghana.

"The University of Ghana boasts the best football facility in the country, making it the perfect venue for this prestigious trophy.

Moreover, the youth-dominated university environment ensures high patronage and an electric atmosphere," he stated.

Simeon-Okraku also stressed the importance of involving the university community in football activities.

"We believe that the University of Ghana should be a primary support front for football, and this partnership will bring the staff and students closer to the sport," he explained.

Promising an exciting and festive event, the President assured that the GFA would create a memorable experience for fans. "

The final will feature loads of entertainment and giveaways by MTN, and the arrival of the trophy will capture the imagination of the fans," he said.

Looking ahead, Simeon-Okraku revealed the GFA's intention to make the University of Ghana Stadium the permanent home for the MTN FA Cup final. "

The University of Ghana will always be a strategic partner in our efforts to develop football, and we intend to make this facility the permanent home of this fixture," he concluded.

As the countdown to the Bono Derby continues, the GFA is collaborating with the Students Representative Council (SRC) to boost enthusiasm and support for the match. MTN, the event's sponsor, will also conduct various activations across campus as part of the buildup.

The clash between Nsoatreman FC and Bofoakwa Tano for the coveted MTN FA Cup trophy will take place on Sunday, June 23, 2024, with kickoff at 18:00 GMT (6 PM).
