The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its profound condolences following a tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on Wednesday, including senior government and security officials.

In a statement, the GFA extended sympathies to President John Mahama, the Government of Ghana, and the families of the victims, calling the incident a “painful national loss.”

Those confirmed dead include:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence

  • Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment

  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

  • Mr Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate

The Association also paid tribute to the military personnel who perished:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Anala

  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo

“The GFA mourns the nation’s collective grief and pays tribute to the dedication and service of all these gallant men who perished in the line of duty,” the statement said.

A notable figure amongst the deceased was Dr Edward Omane Boamah who was once a Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports for a short period under the first tenure of the John Mahama government in 2012. He was influential in the Black Stars’ campaign at the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa as he was appointed coordinator for the Black Stars in that tournament before taking the office of the Minister of Communications later that year.

The GFA’s Executive Council pledged support to the bereaved families and called on the football fraternity to join in offering prayers as the country grieves.
