Ghana's Sports Ministry has initiated discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) regarding the potential hosting of the 2026 Games.

Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif conveyed optimism about the preliminary talks, noting positive feedback from the CGF.

''In fact the president of Commonwealth Games was in Ghana. He has visited our facilities and held a meeting with my good self. I had the opportunity of even attending some of their meetings,''

''And their programs, they want African nation. They said it is time for Africa to host the Commonwealth Games, and Ghana, we have the facilities now.'' he told GH One

Ussif highlighted the interest of the CGF in having an African nation host the Games, with Ghana emerging as a viable candidate due to its existing facilities.

He emphasized that hosting the Commonwealth Games would not incur exorbitant costs compared to previous endeavors, citing potential funding support from the CGF Secretariat.

The vacancy for the 2026 Games arose after Malaysia declined the hosting offer, citing time constraints, costs, and insufficient funding.

The decision mirrored similar concerns expressed by the Australian state of Victoria, which withdrew its bid due to escalating expenses.

Contrary to the staggering costs associated with previous host cities, Ussif reassured that Ghana's expenditure for the Commonwealth Games would be comparatively modest.

He underscored the financial backing anticipated from the CGF Secretariat, distinguishing it from the financial dynamics of hosting the African Games.

While hosting major sporting events can be financially burdensome, exemplified by Birmingham's experience with the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Ussif's comments suggest cautious optimism regarding Ghana's hosting prospects. However, the specifics of funding allocation and potential legacy issues remain unclear.

Ghana's recent expenditure of over $289 million to host the 2023 African Games underscores the substantial financial commitments associated with such endeavors.
