Legendary former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has touched down in Yaounde-Cameroon ahead of the AFCON 2021 draw that will come off on Tuesday.

He will join several former African greats as the draw for the tournament is conducted to know which group each of the 24 teams will be in.

Asamoah Gyan played in seven different African Cup of Nations tournaments scoring six goals same as the revered Samuel Eto'o and Zambia Kalusha Bwalya and finishing as runner-up with Ghana twice in 2010 in Angola and 2015 in Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana's all time top scorer is a guest of the African football governing body after his stellar showing for his country Ghana.

Nowadays, Asamoah Gyan plays in the Ghana Premier League for ambitious Legon Cities although his time at the club was blighted by niggling injuries.

How the draw will be conducted

The draw which will take place at Palas de Congres Hotel in Younde on the Tuesday, 17 August, 2021 will see the 24 participating teams divided into six groups of four.

Ghana are placed in Pot 2 with record champions Egypt, two time holders Cote D’Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea. Host Cameroon are in Pot 1 with champions Algeria, 2019 finalists Senegal, three time champions Nigeria and 1976 champions Morocco.

The 24 qualified teams are allocated to four pots of six teams each, based on the FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking released on 12th August (the last ranking released before the date of the draw).

The qualified teams will be allocated into four pots of six each, based on their FIFA world ranking.

Based on this ranking, the top four teams will be allocated to Pot One along with the hosts, and title holders Algeria.

The remaining 18 teams will be allocated to the three remaining pots according to their ranking in descending order.

The belated 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will run from 9 January to 6 February 6 2022.

The opening match and final will be played at the newly built Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé which has a capacity of 60,000.

Other venues are Douala, Bafoussam, Garoua and Limbe.
