Ghana U20 striker Jerry Afriyie shone as the Man of the Match in a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Côte d'Ivoire in the WAFU B U20 Championship semi-final on Sunday, October 27, 2024, held at the Stade Municipal in Togo.
Afriyie, currently the top scorer with four goals in the tournament, converted a flawless second-half penalty to complete Ghana's comeback after an intense first half.
The Ivorians initially took the lead through Konan Loukou’s early strike, setting Ghana back until a deflected corner allowed them to equalize just before halftime.
This victory secures the Black Satellites' return to the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025, after their previous title win under coach Abdul Karim Zito in 2021.
Head coach Desmond Ofei’s squad now looks forward to the AFCON, where they will also aim for a spot in the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
The WAFU B U20 Championship serves as the pathway to the 2025 U20 AFCON, with only the tournament finalists advancing.
As Ghana eyes the ultimate prize, Afriyie’s leadership and scoring prowess continue to drive the Black Satellites toward continental success and a potential World Cup qualification.
