The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has cautioned the public to brace for continued heavy and frequent rainfall across the country in the coming days.

The warning comes in the wake of a recent rainstorm that caused severe flooding in several parts of the Greater Accra Region, including Pantang, Nsawam, Lakeside, and Kasoa.

Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of GMet’s Central Analysis and Forecast Office, issued the alert during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday.

She emphasized the importance of public preparedness as the country moves deeper into the major rainy season, especially in southern Ghana.

“We stated in our seasonal forecast that the rains this year could be more intense and occur more frequently and it has already begun. What we witnessed along the coast yesterday is a clear sign. And just last Friday, we recorded a similar downpour in the Volta Region, lasting over an hour.” Ahafianyo noted.

She urged residents living in flood-prone areas to take precautions, including considering temporary relocation to safer zones to avoid the risk of being trapped or harmed by floodwaters.

Ahafianyo also appealed to the media to support GMet’s public education campaign by frequently disseminating weather forecasts and updates to keep citizens informed and safe.

“This is how the rainy season will continue until it tapers off later in the year. The more people are aware, the fewer the casualties and damage,” she added.
