The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has congratulated the newly-elected president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the New Patriotic Party for their historic victory in the 2016 general elections.

Mr Akufo-Addo and the NPP won last week’s presidential and parliamentary elections to form the next government.

A statement released by Abdul Rahman Ibrahim and Prince Agbofah Awuku, Coordinating Secretary and Public Relations Officer, respectively, for GNUPS, said: “We equally applaud the outgoing president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for his boldness in accepting defeat ahead of the final declaration by the Electoral Commission. Also worthy of commendation are the millions of Ghanaians, especially students, for the peaceful manner they have conducted themselves throughout the electioneering period.

“GNUPS wishes the incoming president and his team the very best in their tenure of office as they make a case to delivering on their electoral promises to the Ghanaian masses. Just like every Ghanaian, students, especially those of us at the polytechnics, also expect so much from the Akufo-Addo government relative to addressing our legitimate concerns.

“GNUPS also wishes to extend its profound gratitude to the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the good work done. May God richly bless the Commission and all those who contributed positively in ensuring a good electoral exercise.

The statement added: “It is our fervent hope and prayer that we don't get disappointed. We also promise, on our part that, to throw our unflinching support to the Nana Addo government to succeed for the love of God and country.”
