One of the major issues on the web has been tracking and hiding comments by millions of users on videos and posts. Google’s parent company has just introduced a new Chrome extension that could make life simpler for the creators. With the new extension named Tune, people can monitor abusive comments through several websites and posts easily.
The tool that uses machine learning to detect such comments, is made by Jigsaw, Google’s sister company. The tech that came in to being in the form of an API back in 2017, now essentially uses the same machine learning tech with the Tune Chrome extension. It can be downloaded from the Chrome web store.

The extension requires you to log in to your Google account. Once done, you can control the level of abusiveness in comments that you want to get removed. For now, this works on five social websites including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and Disqus.

The Tune icon will show up on the top corner of the Chrome browser when the users visit any of the five websites. From there they can use the rotating dial to control the comment filters all the way from ‘Show All’ to ‘Hide all’. The ‘Show All’ option would show all kinds of insults, abuses and other comments with personal attacks among others. Rotating the dial to the other side completely won’t show you a single comment on the posts.

“Tune lets you turn the volume of toxic comments down for “zen mode” to skip comments completely, or turn it up to see everything — even the mean stuff. Or you can set the volume somewhere in between to customize the level of toxicity (e.g. attacks, insults, profanity, etc) you’re willing to see in comments,” says CJ Adams, product manager at Jigsaw, in a post on Medium.

Since this is an ‘experimental’ tool, it might not be able to completely eliminate abusive comments all the time. However, Jigsaw plans to improve it over time.
