The minister for foreign affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has stated that Ghana is not in any agreement with the US. to deport Ghanaians from America.

So far, the United States has expressed interest to deport 7,000 Ghanaians living there illegally but Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has insisted that Ghana will not facilitate the deportations despite bouts of diplomatic pressure from the US.

“They feel that anybody they arrest who says is a Ghanaian, then they come [back] within 24hours”, she explained some of the demands to Joy News’ Evans Mensah.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said the requests are “just not possible” and also expressed concerns about the manner in which Ghanaians are deported.

“They are brought back on chartered flights and they are shackled. Some are put in belly chains. It is not right”, she further stated.

The outgoing US ambassador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson, had revealed the United States ambassador to Ghana, has revealed that about 7,000 Ghanaians are in the process of being deported from the United States of America (USA) to Ghana for various immigration offenses.

Mr. Jackson revealed this during an address at a discussion session organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs on United States-Africa Relations Monday (June 11, 2018) in Accra.

While at it, Ambassador Jackson stressed the need for all countries to control their borders.

"First, we are talking about 7,000, not 60,000 Ghanaians who are in various stages of being deported from the United States and on that issue just as we have a responsibility to patrol our borders, countries around the world have a responsibility to issue travel documents to their citizens so that they can return to those countries," he said.
