Gov’t to establish technical and vocational education fund — Haruna Iddrisu
4th June 2025
Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans to establish a dedicated fund aimed at driving investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the Minister explained the role of TVET in addressing youth unemployment and equipping the workforce with practical skills for both the formal and informal sectors.
“In respect of TVET, I am working with cabinet to get approval to establish a Technical and Vocational Education Fund, to spare investment in the education infrastructure for Technical and Vocational Education. This year, in the allocation of the GETFund formula, we provided for some dedicated financing for Technical and Vocational Education,” he stated.
TVET is a core component of Ghana’s education and skills development strategy, designed to provide learners with practical skills, knowledge, and attitudes for employment, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning.
However, despite ongoing reforms, the sector continues to grapple with long-standing challenges.
These include the perception of TVET as a fallback for academically weak students, inconsistent and inadequate funding for infrastructure and equipment, limited collaboration between training providers and industry, and outdated facilities lacking modern tools.
The sector also faces a shortage of qualified instructors and minimal opportunities for their continuous professional development.
The proposed fund is expected to address these gaps by attracting consistent investment and improving the quality and appeal of TVET nationwide.
