Minisiter for Business Development, Mohamed Awal has reechoed government's commitment to promote entrepreneurship in the country revealing that basic school students could soon be learning entrepreneurship as part of the education curricula.

Speaking in a meeting entrepreneurs in Kumasi, the Former CEO of Graphic Communications Group indicated that the discussions are ongoing with the Ghana Education Service for the introduction of the subject.

He said; “If you introduce entrepreneurship education to people at the primary, junior high or senior high school level, they grow up with that mentality that they do not only go to school to look at government for jobs but they can be job owners,”

Adding that, “We want to build entrepreneurship culture among the Ghanaians and one of our works is to introduce entrepreneurship to Ghanaians at the very basic level."

The Ministry of Business Development will assist the education ministry to develop the content of the model according to Mr Awal.

"With the Ministry of Education, we will start from JHS, SHS and above, so that we make Ghanaians conscious that they can own their own businesses," the Minister said.

The Minister in an earlier meeting with entrepreneurs announced a three-year tax holiday for upcoming business start-ups operating in the country as part of government's measures to encourage entrepreneurship.

“We think that start-ups need some space to grow. The essence of all these is to create jobs for our people and improve livelihoods. We want to encourage that when start-ups take off, for the first three years, they need not pay taxes.”

“They will plough back their profits, they expand their business and they can employ people. We’ll also help them with markets because there’s no point having a business that you cannot sell.”

He continued that “another policy that we want to look at is that, 10 per cent of public funded projects or businesses should go to start-ups and that already give them the market to grow. It is not yet a policy but something that we’re pursuing.”

The Business Development Minister also revealed that government will from July this year begin disbursing some $10 million to some young entrepreneurs who have undergone training to create businesses.
