Graeme Souness warns against overrating Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo
5th September 2024
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has expressed caution regarding the rapid elevation of Manchester United's young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
Despite Mainoo's promising performances and his pivotal role in last season's FA Cup final, Souness believes the 19-year-old is not yet ready to be a key player for the Red Devils.
"Mainoo has potential, but at Manchester United, there's a tendency to elevate young players to superstar status before they've proven themselves," Souness told talkSPORT.
He advised that Mainoo should be integrated into the team gradually, rather than being expected to perform consistently against top-tier opponents from the start.
Mainoo's impact last season, including a decisive goal in the FA Cup final and a starting role in England's Euro 2024 final against Spain, has garnered significant attention.
However, Souness cautions that the hype surrounding Mainoo might be premature.
"Right now, Mainoo should be a player coming in and out of a strong squad, rather than being asked to step up consistently against elite competition," Souness explained.
He emphasizes the importance of allowing young players to develop at a measured pace, rather than thrusting them into the spotlight too soon.
