The World Boxing Council (WBC) will honour Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a prestigious award on June 13, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
This event is part of the WBC's "The Year of Africa" celebrations, which aim to commemorate the history, achievements, magnificence, and splendour of African boxing.
Azumah Nelson, widely regarded as the greatest African boxer of all time, has had an illustrious career spanning several decades.
Born on July 19, 1958, in Bukom, Accra, Nelson won multiple world titles in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions.
He first won the WBC featherweight world title in December 1984 by stopping Wilfredo Gomez in Puerto Rico and held onto the title until 1988.
Nelson then moved up to annex the super featherweight strap, which he twice won and reigned over until 1997.
Previous Accolades
Nelson has received numerous accolades for his achievements in boxing. In 2004, he became the first African to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
The WBC has also recognized him as the greatest super featherweight of all time.
In 2018, Nelson was presented with a silver vase and two honorary boxing belts by the WBC during his 60th birthday celebration at a fight show in Accra.
