GRNMA suspend nationwide strike
13th June 2025
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially suspended its nationwide strike, which began on June 9, 2025, in protest against the government’s delay in implementing revised conditions of service.
At a press briefing in Accra, GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo announced the suspension, urging the government to show respect for the nursing profession and urgently address the welfare concerns of its members.
The strike was triggered by the government’s proposal to defer the implementation of newly negotiated conditions of service to 2026, an arrangement the Association strongly rejected.
The industrial action significantly disrupted healthcare delivery across the country. Public hospitals reported severe staff shortages, longer patient wait times, and delayed access to critical services. Emergency units and maternity wards were particularly affected.
Despite several rounds of negotiations including an emergency meeting on June 9 involving the Ministry of Health, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and GRNMA leadership no immediate agreement was reached, prompting the continuation of the strike.
However, mounting pressure from the public, civil society, and key health sector stakeholders pushed both sides back to the negotiating table. The strike was suspended following fresh commitments from the government to reconsider its implementation timeline and strengthen ongoing dialogue.
While announcing the suspension, Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo emphasised that nurses and midwives would resume work but warned that the Association would remain vigilant.
She stated that government negotiators must treat the next phase of discussions with seriousness and sincerity because failure to honour their commitments in good faith could lead to further action.
