The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has dismissed as false social media reports suggesting that cement prices would increase by ¢6 per bag starting Monday, January 19, 2026, easing concerns among contractors, developers and other stakeholders in the construction sector.

In a statement, the Authority clarified that it has issued no directive for a price increase and that the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee—on which the GSA serves—has not approved any adjustment in cement prices.

“The notice suggesting a ¢6 increase in cement prices from Monday, 19th January 2026, is false. The Cement Manufacturing Development Committee, including the GSA, has not issued any such directive. We urge the public to verify information through our official channels before taking action,” the statement said.

The clarification comes at a period of heightened sensitivity within the construction industry, where cement prices have a direct impact on project costs, housing delivery timelines and overall sector competitiveness.

The misleading notice had triggered anxiety among builders, real estate developers and suppliers, many of whom are already dealing with elevated input costs accumulated over the past year.

Cement pricing remains a critical concern for industry players as companies prepare budgets for ongoing and planned projects in 2026, against the backdrop of easing inflation and relative stability of the cedi.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, is expected to meet with cement manufacturers later today. The discussions are anticipated to focus on pushing for possible price reductions in line with improving macroeconomic conditions, as well as addressing structural and operational challenges confronting the cement industry.
