The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a formal query to the Acting Deputy Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), J. R. Achoanya Ayam, seeking clarification and proof of his use of the academic title “Dr.”

In a letter dated November 4, 2025, and signed by Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, Director-General of GTEC, the Commission raised concerns over the use of unverified academic titles, warning that doing so contravenes Ghana’s academic standards and protocols.

“The use of such titles, particularly when they lack formal academic validation, can be misleading and is inconsistent with the established academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana,” the letter stated.

GTEC has directed Mr. Ayam to submit documentary evidence supporting his claim to the title, including the name of the awarding institution, a copy of the degree certificate, and academic transcripts for verification.

The Commission further instructed that if he cannot produce the required documents, he must immediately cease using the title “Dr.” in all official and public capacities including institutional documents, websites, and letterheads.

GTEC indicated that a copy of the directive has been forwarded to the Ministry of Education for enforcement. The correspondence, which supersedes an earlier letter dated November 3, 2025, requires full compliance by November 10, 2025.

“The Commission expects your full cooperation on this matter,” the letter concluded.
