The Ghana Writers Association has called on government to introduce poetry as a subject in the curricula of schools.

The group made the call at an event to celebrate Ghanaian poetry and poets as part of activities to mark World Poetry Day on Wednesday, 21 March 2018.

Speaking to Class News, Kojo Yibo, an executive member of the association, said: “Basically, I think the support that can come from government is to reintroduce poetry as a main curriculum in the schools from primary, JHS, SHS and maybe to the university level… If they are not taught in the schools, the interest will not be there...”

“Money is not the issue, but if you pay the performers well, there will be more who will come into it but we should know it is an important part of our cultural fabric and that we need to give more recognition to it.”
