Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, endured a dismal qualification campaign, finishing bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches—three losses and three draws.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana has missed out on the prestigious continental competition, with their last absence dating back to 2004.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, which included a 2-1 defeat to Niger in the final qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium, Asante Twum acknowledged the widespread frustration among Ghanaians.
He expressed his regret over the disappointing outcome during an interview with Asempa FM.
“I would like to apologize to Ghanaians for the massive disappointment of not qualifying for the AFCON,” Asante Twum said.
“I have followed the Black Stars for two decades, and I have never seen anything like this before. We went into qualifiers, played six games, and didn’t win a single one. I have never witnessed that before.”
With Ghana finishing outside the top two in Group F, they will miss the AFCON tournament in Morocco next year.
The Black Stars’ focus will now shift to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which will begin next year as they seek to redeem themselves on the global stage.
