NEW DELHI: For those who are aware of Apple product launches, the term ‘Flexgate’ may ring a bell. The term was used for MacBook laptops back in 2016 and dealt with the devices display cable. Two years after, the iFixit website now reports that the Cupertino-based tech firm has quietly fixed that issue by upgrading the display cable.
As mentioned by the website, the 2018 Apple MacBook Pro now uses a 2mm longer display cable than the last version. This means that the cable, which is placed right on the hinge, will now have less strain when the laptop is open or closed. The one that came in the 2016 model was shorter and with regular opening and closing of the lid got damaged and as a result, gave out a stage light effect on the screen’s bottom edge.

Also mentioned is that the 2016 display cables eventually stopped working when the MacBook’s screen opened more than 90 degrees.

“In this space-saving design, the thin cable wraps around a small circuit board where it is pulled taut as the laptop opens and closes. After a year or two of opening and closing the laptop, the cable will wear down, causing the display to start failing with a distinctive stage-light effect,” said iFixit.

The website adds that since the $6 cable was a part of the laptop’s screen, a single fault would cost users a hefty $700 to change the screen.

In the related news, Apple is rumoured to launch the 2019 version of Apple MacBook devices. It is speculated that the handset may feature FaceID, a tech that is included in iPhones and iPads for now. According to a research note by an analyst, Apple will introduce new MacBook Pro sporting a screen size of around 16-inch or 16.5-inch. The 2019 MacBook Pro is expected to come in an all-new design. This will be the largest screen in a Mac laptop after Apple discontinued 17-inch MacBook Pro in the year 2012.
